Pangaea (Double Live Album) - Miles Davis
Product Description
Pangaea is a double live album by legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, recorded during his Osaka concert on February 1, 1975. This performance marks Davis' third tour of Japan, and the album captures the evening's set, which contrasts with the afternoon show recorded for the companion album Agharta.
Released under the title Pangaea, the album was originally marketed as Pangaea no Kokuin in Japan. It serves as one of the final official recordings of Davis from the 1970s before his extended break, which lasted until he returned to the studio in 1980 to record The Man with the Horn.
The album features a unique fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and R&B, and is highly regarded by fans of 1970s Miles Davis. The concert performance is largely built around collective improvisation, with pieces like "Zimbabwe" and "Gondwana" not being traditional titles, but rather thematic names given to two sets of extended improvisations.
Alongside Miles Davis, the ensemble includes top-tier musicians like Sonny Fortune (saxophone, flute), Pete Cosey (electric guitar, synthesizer, percussion), and Reggie Lucas (electric guitar), contributing to the intense and innovative sound. Unlike many of Davis' other albums, Pangaea and its companion Agharta were not edited by his longtime producer Teo Macero, showcasing the raw and unfiltered energy of the live performance. The album’s artwork was designed by Teruhisa Tajima.
