MoMA Hilma af Klint What Stands Behind the Flowers Hardcover Book
Product Description
Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers is a hardcover publication exploring the botanical works of pioneering abstract artist Hilma af Klint. The book accompanies the first exhibition dedicated to her remarkable series Nature Studies.
In April 1919, af Klint left her studio to study the first flowers of spring, beginning a new artistic exploration rooted in direct observation of nature. While she had already produced groundbreaking abstract paintings, this project turned her attention toward the natural world.
The resulting series includes more than one hundred watercolor studies of blooming plants. These works combine precise botanical observation with symbolic abstract forms such as spirals, concentric targets, and nested squares. For af Klint, these elements represented spiritual qualities she perceived within the natural world.
This richly illustrated volume presents the Nature Studies series alongside newly translated excerpts from the artist’s writings. Essays by leading scholars examine the historical background, materials, and philosophical ideas behind the works, while also discussing newly discovered related pieces.
Edited by Jodi Hauptman, the book includes essays by Ewa Lajer-Burcharth, Laura Neufeld, and Lena Struwe. With 272 pages and 216 illustrations, the publication provides an in-depth look at an important chapter in the artistic legacy of Hilma af Klint.
